About Manchester United

Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, in 1910. It is the most successful football club in England and one of the wealthiest and most widely supported football teams in the world.

Apart from the numerous trophies won by Manchester United, the club is mostly remembered for the Munich air disaster that occurred on 6 February 1958, killing 23 of the 44 people on board the aircraft. The team was returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), against Red Star Belgrade.

In 1968, Man. Utd became the first English team to bring back home the European Champions Cup by comprehensively beating FC Benfica (4-1) in the final.

The 27-year drought in the League ended in 1993 but the real renaissance of United started in 1986 under the era of Sir Alex Ferguson (SAF) who retired as Manager in 2013. It took him five long years to reshape the team before accumulating 38 trophies! The fairy-tale started with a famous (2-1) victory over FC Barcelona in the European Cup Winners' Cup final in 1991...

Under the reign of SAF, United has collected no less than 38 trophies:

  • 8 Community Shields
  • 4 League Cups
  • 7 FA Cups
  • 13 Premiership titles
  • 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup
  • 2 UEFA Champions League
  • 1 UEFA Super Cup
  • 1 Intercontinental Cup
  • 1 FIFA Club World Cup

This is an impressive amount indeed but even more impressive is that, during that period, Man. Utd has completed two doubles (Premiership-FA Cup) and an unprecedented treble in 1999 (Premiership-FA Cup-Champions League).

Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement as manager of Manchester United on 8th May 2013, only to leave behind a legacy that would probably never be surpassed. Since then, the club has been constantly changing managers and caretaker managers in its quest to match the greatness of Sir Alex Ferguson:

  • 01 Jul 2013 - David Moyes (Manager)
  • 22 Apr 2014 - Ryan Giggs (Caretaker Manager)
  • 19 May 2014 - Louis van Gaal (Manager)
  • 27 May 2016 - José Mourinho (Manager)
  • 28 Mar 2019 - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Manager)
  • 21 Nov 2021 - Michael Carrick (Caretaker Manager)
  • 29 Nov 2021 - Ralf Rangnick (Interim Manager)
  • 21 Apr 2022 - Erik Ten Hag (Manager)

On 24th May 2017, the 54-year-old Mourinho "closed the circle" of trophies at club level for Manchester United by guiding the club to winning the UEFA Europa League. United also won the Community Shield and the League Cup in the same season.

At present, United holds at least the following records:

  • The first English team to win
    • the European Champions Cup (1968)
    • the UEFA Champions League (1999)
    • the Intercontinental Cup (1999)
    • the FIFA Club World Cup (2009)
    • the Big Treble - Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League (1999)
    • 15 home games in a row (2011)

  • Winner of a record number of
    • Division I/Premership titles (20)
    • Charity/Community Shields (21)
    • League-Cup doubles (3 - 1993-94, 1995-96, 1998-99)

  • Biggest home wins in the Premiership: 9-0 vs Ipswich Town (1998-99) and Southampton (2020-21)
  • The only player (Ryan Giggs) to score in 21 straight Premier League Seasons (1992-93 to 2012-13)
  • The goalkeeper (Edwin van der Sar) to remain unbeaten in most consecutive Premiership matches (1 311 minutes)
  • The first player (Wayne Rooney) to score 10 or more goals in 11 straight Premier League Seasons
  • The only English club to have won all major trophies at club level.

Glory Glory Man. United !
